White Dorper Sheep In North Central Texas

Our small farm is located near Stephenville, TX in North Central Texas. We maintain a small flock of sheep consisting mostly of registered full blood and purebred White Dorper sheep. We are members of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders’ Society. We would love to hear about your interest in White Dorper sheep and would be happy to try to help build your own flock.

White Dorpers are good grazers that can adapt to a wide variety of grazing conditions. As long as good quality grass is available, White Dorpers maintain good body condition without the need for supplemental feeding. Because this breed naturally shed their hair and wool each year, there is no need for annual shearing, thereby reducing production costs significantly.

White Dorper ewes are good mothers and often have twins and triplets. In addition, they are polyestrous meaning that they do not have a defined breeding season based on day length like many other breeds of sheep. Some producers elect to run rams with ewes throughout the year resulting in a breeding interval as short as eight months resulting in three births every two years. As a result, lamb crops of 150-180% are not uncommon. White Dorper lambs grow rapidly on pasture alongside their mothers and reach breeding age at 10-12 months.

In Texas, Dorper and White Dorper sheep popularity has increased dramatically in recent years resulting in continued demand for good quality breeding stock as well as commercial flock replacements. It is not uncommon for Dorper and White Dorper Ewes to persist for 7 or more years in commercial settings.

Two distinct breeds of Dorper sheep exist. The black headed variety are called “Dorpers”, and the unmarked sheep “White Dorpers”. Both breeds can be purchased as fullblood or purebred registered by the American Dorper Sheep Breeders' Society. “Fullblood” animals are those that can trace their genetic lineage back to only sheep originally imported from South Africa. “Purebred” means that those individuals have been upgraded from American stock and is at least 93% (15/16ths) Dorper or White Dorper genetics. Dorpers and White Dorpers can be polled or horned.
